For five years, I bought every "clean" serum, every J-beauty essence, every French apothecary balm. Every single one slipped off my face by 11am.
I'm Kalei Iwasaki. I was born on Oʻahu and trained as a green chemist at the University of Hawaiʻi. I spent my twenties in cosmetic labs in Tokyo and Paris, formulating for brands whose products were tested in 50% humidity rooms in temperate Switzerland — then shipped to my mother in Hilo, where the air is 84% water by August.
Everything that was "hydrating" was actually water. Everything that was "clean" was emulsified in a way that broke at 87°F. The problem wasn't the ingredients. It was the unstated assumption — the silent baseline — that skin lives in dry rooms.
Mochi Pīkake is what happens when you start from a different baseline. We formulate at 78% RH, in a small open-air lab on the windward side of Oʻahu, between a banyan tree and the Pacific. Every product is field-validated by 240 testers across four tropical and sub-tropical zones — not by a lab panel in Geneva.
The lab
An open-air apothecary, not a clean-room.
Our 1,200 sq ft studio sits on Kalanianaʻole Highway, half a mile from the ocean. The doors stay open. The air is part of the formulation environment. If a balm clouds in our lab, it'll cloud in a customer's bathroom — and we'll never know unless we feel it ourselves.
We make in 600-unit micro-batches. Every bottle is hand-decanted, hand-labeled, and shipped within 18 days of pouring.

Zero water. We refuse to ship 85% emulsified water across an ocean.
